Proteas come in a variety of sizes and colours and are members of the Proteaceae family, a genus of 130 species of African shrubs. The unusual flowers are named after Proteus, the Greek god who was known to be able to change into different shapes. Pincushion Protea, a dome shaped blossom that resembles a pincushion with pins in it. The flowers' name, therefore, refers to the flower heads' varied forms. Protea is native to South America and grows wild there. Banksias are members of the Proteaceae family, and are indigenous to South Africa and Australia. Other family members include proteas, leucospermums and leucadendrons.

Valued for their bold forms and textures, strong colors and long vase lives, banksias and larger proteas make interesting focal flowers for floral arrangements. When arranging banksias and proteas, use a high-density floral foam and consider reinforcing the foam with chicken wire to support the flowers' heavy stems. Use sturdy vases to store these flowers, which are frequently top-heavy.
